German authorities have launched a coordinated crackdown on a group suspected of orchestrating hundreds of fake bomb threats across the country, targeting schools, train stations, and shopping centers to incite public unrest.
Police conducted simultaneous raids on Tuesday in the states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Hesse, and Saxony-Anhalt. Four suspects were targeted in the operation, two of whom are reported to be minors under the age of 18. The group, which allegedly organized via the internet, is accused of sending mass emails containing bomb threats that triggered extensive police responses and evacuations.
disrupting public peace
According to the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor's Office, the suspects' primary objective was to "disturb the public peace and create anxiety among the population." The threats led to significant disruptions and fear, even though no actual explosives were found.
Authorities cited several specific incidents linked to the group, including the evacuation of a shopping center in Essen in May 2024, the Neunkirchen train station in September 2024, and a broadcasting center in Magdeburg in October 2024. More recently, in December 2024, threats targeted a large shopping mall in Saxony-Anhalt and a school in Bad Hersfeld.
While the hoax calls did not result in direct physical injuries or fatalities, the resulting evacuations and police operations caused widespread disruption to daily life and strained emergency resources.
