WASHINGTON, D.C. — Amazon founder Jeff Bezos shared a cryptic black-and-white photo of a tortoise on X, a move widely interpreted by industry observers as a subtle jab at rival Elon Musk’s recent strategic pivot in the space race.
The post appeared just 12 hours after Musk announced that SpaceX would shift its short-term focus from Mars to the Moon. For many, the imagery was a direct reference to the "slow and steady" philosophy of Bezos’ own space venture, Blue Origin, which features two tortoises on its coat of arms.
"Slow and steady wins the race"
According to Ars Technica, the tortoise is a central symbol for Blue Origin, representing Aesop’s fable of "The Tortoise and the Hare." The motto conveys the idea that consistency and careful planning eventually triumph over erratic speed. By posting the image, Bezos appears to be reminding Musk that he has long advocated for the Moon as the primary gateway to the solar system—a position Musk has only recently prioritized over his long-held Mars ambitions.
Since 2019, Bezos has been a vocal supporter of NASA’s Artemis Program, famously stating that humanity must return to the Moon "to stay." The tortoise post serves as both a "welcome to the club" and a suggestion that Blue Origin's methodical approach may ultimately prove more successful in establishing a permanent lunar presence.
NASA’s Artemis and the landing contracts
The rivalry between the two billionaires intensified five years ago when NASA tasked private firms with developing human landing systems for the Moon. While SpaceX secured a contract for its Starship, Blue Origin later received a contract for its Blue Moon MK2 lander.
Initially, SpaceX held a significant advantage due to its high frequency of launches and established flight history. However, the dynamics shifted in 2025. Following a series of Starship test failures involving explosions, concerns grew regarding the feasibility of a 2030 landing timeline. Meanwhile, reports suggest that China is rapidly progressing with a simpler landing architecture, aiming to put humans on the Moon before the end of the decade.
Blue Origin’s accelerated lunar plan
Recent documents reveal that Blue Origin is working on an "accelerated" lunar mission that bypasses the need for complex orbital refueling—a requirement that has slowed SpaceX's progress. The proposed plan consists of two primary stages:
-
Unmanned Demonstration: Utilizing the New Glenn rocket for three launches to test orbital docking and lunar surface landing.
-
Manned Mission: Transporting astronauts to the lunar surface and ensuring a safe return to orbit.
While this architecture avoids the challenges of fuel transfer, it still requires intricate deep-space maneuvers and docking procedures—areas where Blue Origin has yet to prove its operational capabilities.
The new space race of the 21st century
The competition for lunar dominance has now evolved into a three-way race between China’s state-backed program, SpaceX, and Blue Origin. Bezos’ symbolic message underscores the high stakes involved as the private sector attempts to fulfill NASA's vision.
Whether the "tortoise" or the "hare" will land the first humans of the 21st century on the Moon remains an open question, but the technological and rhetorical battle between the world's wealthiest men continues to intensify as 2030 approaches.
