Sánchez urges ‘moral rearmament’ against Putin at Munich

By Ahmet Taş | Wise News Press

MUNICH, GERMANY —  Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez made a landmark appearance at the Munich Security Conference, urging global leaders to pursue "moral rearmament" instead of a nuclear arms race in the face of Russian President Vladimir Putin's aggression.

Sánchez, the first Spanish premier to attend the forum, criticized the strategy of mass armament, noting that over $11 million is spent every hour on nuclear weapons globally. Citing reports from the Associated Press (AP), he emphasized that the $946 billion projected for US nuclear spending over the next decade could alone eradicate extreme poverty worldwide.

Values over nuclear spending

Questioning the practicality of nuclear expansion, Sánchez argued that such weapons provide no true protection against modern threats. He voiced deep concern regarding the integration of Artificial Intelligence into nuclear arsenals and reinforced his position by quoting Ronald Reagan:

"A nuclear war cannot be won."

Sánchez framed the debate not as an ideological divide between left and right, but as a pragmatic choice between effective safety and the dangerous escalation of weaponry.

European defense and the US relationship

While rejecting nuclear proliferation, Sánchez clarified that Spain remains committed to defense. He noted that Madrid has tripled its military spending and doubled its deployed troops. He advocated for the creation of a genuine European army, stating that Spain would cooperate "in whatever is necessary" without falling into a state of "vassalage" toward the United States.

The conference atmosphere was notably tense, given the presence of Marco Rubio representing the Trump administration. Sánchez condemned those in the US who perceive the European Union as a threat rather than a partner, insisting on a Transatlantic bond that respects European autonomy and competitive strength.
