Maia Sandu warns Middle East war poses major risk to energy costs

CHISINAU, MOLDOVA — President Maia Sandu, speaking on Jurnal TV on March 5, 2026, warned that the escalating conflict in the Middle East could directly lead to reduced energy supplies and significant price increases for the Republic of Moldova.

As a nation heavily reliant on imported resources, Moldova faces a precarious economic situation where global market uncertainty and blocked trade routes threaten to destabilize local commodity costs. The head of state explained that the strategic importance of the Middle East for energy production means any disruption to trade routes will immediately tighten the global market.

Supply chain vulnerabilities

Sandu emphasized that the conflict is occurring in a region vital for global trade and energy resources. Any blockage of these routes could reduce the quantities available on the market, forcing prices higher across the entire supply chain.

"If this war continues, we will see not only a rise in energy resource prices but also an increase in the costs of other products and commodities," Sandu stated during the broadcast. She expressed hope for a quick resolution but cautioned that a prolonged conflict would only worsen existing economic problems.

Domestic reserves and local production

The President noted that while Moldova is working to maintain domestic reserves to manage potential market turbulence, the country remains highly vulnerable due to its lack of local energy production. This total dependence on imports makes the economy highly sensitive to international destabilization.

In light of these risks, Sandu urged local producers to plan for less favorable scenarios. "I believe that local producers need to consider a scenario which entails a prolonged war, diminished supplies, and increased prices," she remarked, highlighting that in an interconnected world, energy markets react instantly to crises regardless of their geographic location.

Fragile global security frameworks

Beyond the immediate economic impact, Sandu shared her concern regarding the broader trend of rising armed conflicts. She suggested that the global security frameworks nations have relied on for decades are becoming increasingly fragile, marking a shift into a more unstable global period.

According to Sandu, the rise in regional violence indicates that the world is entering a phase where the price of destabilization is paid by everyone. She reiterated that developments in the region remain concerning for Moldova’s long-term security and economic planning.
