BUCHAREST, ROMANIA — Mihai Mîțu, the newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Romania, officially presented his letters of credence to Romanian President Nicușor-Daniel Dan during a formal ceremony at the Cotroceni Palace on Friday.

The event marks the formal commencement of Mîțu's diplomatic mission in Bükreş, where he will oversee a mandate focused on accelerating Moldova's European Union integration and deepening economic cooperation between the two neighboring states. During the discussions, Mîțu conveyed high-level greetings from Moldovan President Maia Sandu and expressed gratitude for Romania's unwavering support in bilateral relations.

Strategic priorities for the new mandate

The meeting at the Cotroceni Palace outlined several key priorities for Ambassador Mîțu’s tenure. Central to these objectives is the intensification of bilateral political dialogue, particularly regarding the official opening of Moldova's EU accession negotiations.

Mîțu also emphasized the need to boost economic and trade relations. This involves the rigorous implementation of shared infrastructure projects and the active pursuit of Romanian investments in the Moldovan market. The ambassador intends to leverage his extensive experience to strengthen the [European integration] path of the Republic of Moldova.

Security and regional resilience

In light of the current geopolitical climate, the discussions also touched upon regional security and institutional resilience. Both parties agreed on the importance of cooperation in combating hybrid threats and defending against disinformation campaigns that affect regional stability.

President Nicușor Dan reaffirmed Romania’s "constant and unequivocal" support for Moldova's European aspirations. He highlighted the importance of enhancing [strategic cooperation] to meet the unique challenges of the current regional context and assured the new ambassador of full support from Romanian authorities throughout his mandate.

A career diplomat with 20 years of experience

Mihai Mîțu is a seasoned career diplomat with a professional background spanning more than 20 years. Appointed to the post in late January 2026, he previously served as the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he led efforts to modernize institutional management and digitalize consular services.

Mîțu’s extensive career includes postings at Moldova’s diplomatic missions in Sweden and the United States, as well as prior service in Romania. He is notably recognized for coordinating the organization of the 2023 European Political Community Summit held in Moldova.
