MGK emphasizes support for Syria's territorial integrity

ANKARA, TURKEY — Turkey's National Security Council (MGK) reiterated its strong support for Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity during its first meeting of 2026, held at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.

The meeting, chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, lasted three hours and concluded with a nine-point declaration addressing domestic and regional security challenges.

Commitment to Syria's Stability

The council emphasized Turkey's dedication to strengthening Syria's political unity and unitary structure. It was noted that efforts to improve the peace, security, and welfare of the Syrian people would continue as a priority. This stance aligns with Turkey's broader goal of fostering regional stability and preventing further humanitarian crises.

Counter-Terrorism and National Security

The declaration reaffirmed Turkey's determination to combat all threats to national unity, specifically naming the PKK/KCK-PYD/YPG, FETÖ, and ISIS terror organizations. The council reviewed the progress made toward a "Terror-Free Turkey" and vowed to maintain operations both domestically and abroad with continued resolve to ensure lasting security.

Regional Crises and Global Diplomacy

Addressing broader regional issues, the MGK evaluated the current situation in Gaza, reaffirming Turkey's readiness to take responsibility for delivering humanitarian aid and establishing permanent peace. Additionally, the council highlighted the importance of stability in Iran for regional security and discussed the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, urging all parties to act responsibly to preserve stability in the Black Sea.
