ISTANBUL, TURKEY — Turkish authorities on Wednesday arrested six individuals, including one Iranian national, on charges of conducting political and military espionage on behalf of Iran.
The joint operation, carried out by the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) and police forces, follows allegations that the group monitored critical infrastructure and maintained contact with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
Surveillance of strategic military sites
According to reports from Anadolu Agency (AA), the suspects are accused of gathering intelligence on sensitive areas, specifically conducting reconnaissance at the NATO Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey. Following their apprehension, all six suspects appeared before a judge in Istanbul, who ordered they be held in custody pending trial for military espionage.
Rising regional tensions and security concerns
The arrests coincide with a period of heightened regional friction and concerns regarding potential external military actions involving Iran. While the Iranian Embassy in Ankara has not yet issued a statement, Turkish officials have previously warned that foreign interventions in neighboring Iran could trigger widespread instability and a potential refugee crisis.
