CHISINAU, MOLDOVA — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Republic of Moldova officially activated its Crisis Cell on February 28, 2026, in response to a drastic and significant deterioration of the security situation across the Middle East.
As coordinated air strikes continue and regional airspaces are shuttered, the MFA has moved into a state of continuous monitoring, aiming to manage the safety of Moldovan nationals residing in or traveling through the affected zones. The Crisis Cell is currently serving as the central hub for the Republic of Moldova’s diplomatic missions, ensuring that citizens in the State of Israel, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Azerbaijan, and Türkiye receive real-time instructions as the conflict evolves.
Immediate Crisis Response in the State of Israel
In the State of Israel, which remains the epicenter of the current military escalation, Moldovan authorities have issued an urgent directive for all citizens to remain in missile shelters. The MFA emphasizes that individuals must strictly follow the instructions of local Israeli authorities and should not leave protected areas until an official announcement declares it safe to do so.
The ongoing air strikes have caused significant infrastructure damage, leading to the possibility of temporary disruptions to telecommunications and internet services. Moldovan nationals needing emergency assistance are urged to contact the Embassy in Tel Aviv through the following channels:
-
Phone: +972 52 778 9772 / +972 52 278 7326

Airspace Closures Paralyze Qatar and the UAE
The security crisis has rapidly expanded into the Persian Gulf, where the State of Qatar has officially closed its airspace to all civilian traffic. The Moldovan government has advised its citizens in Qatar to consider sheltering at home and to avoid any vicinity of government buildings, military facilities, or law enforcement institutions. Public demonstrations and crowded areas are to be strictly avoided as local tensions remain high.
In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where airspace is also heavily affected, the MFA advises regular checks with airlines, as flight statuses are subject to change without notice. The Moldovan Embassy in Abu Dhabi, which also covers diplomatic affairs for Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, is on high alert to assist those stranded by the cancellations.

Strategic Border Management in Azerbaijan and Türkiye
The Republic of Azerbaijan has maintained its land border with Iran in a closed state for regular passenger crossings. The Moldovan MFA has clarified that emergency departures through this border are only possible with prior institutional coordination. Citizens currently in Iran are urged to identify available exit routes immediately and contact the embassy in Baku for guidance on approved evacuation corridors.
Meanwhile, in the Republic of Türkiye, the situation remains fluid. While flights from Turkish hubs to Iran have been temporarily suspended, the land border between Türkiye and Iran remains open. however, Chisinau warns that controls have been intensified and significant delays at border crossing points are expected. There has been no official announcement regarding a complete closure of the Turkish-Iranian border at this stage.

Evacuation Protocols and Identification Procedures
The MFA Crisis Cell has reiterated that all Moldovan citizens in the region must keep their identity documents—including passports and residence permits—readily available at all times. In the event of a forced evacuation or the opening of humanitarian corridors, these documents will be essential for crossing international borders and accessing state-sponsored transport.
The ministry also warns against the spread of misinformation during the conflict. Citizens are urged to follow only official information released by the MFA, the Embassies of the Republic of Moldova, or recognized Consular Offices. The situation is being monitored minute-by-minute, and the Crisis Cell will provide updates as new developments regarding "Epic Fury" (the regional operation name) become available.
General Safety Recommendations for Regional Travel
The Republic of Moldova has issued a blanket recommendation against all non-essential travel to the Middle East until the current security threat level subsides. For those already in the region, the following general safety rules apply:
-
Check flight status before heading to any airport to avoid being stranded in sensitive public areas.
-
Maintain distance from all military sites and law enforcement institutions, as these are considered high-risk targets.
-
Ensure communication with family members in Moldova to keep them informed of your whereabouts and safety status.
The Moldovan government continues to call for calm, vigilance, and individual responsibility. The Crisis Cell's primary goal remains the prevention of loss of life and the safe return of all citizens from the conflict zone.
