TEHRAN, IRAN — U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli intelligence officials have claimed the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei following a massive joint air strike in Tehran, a report Iran continues to deny.
The operation, dubbed "Epic Fury," targeted the "Leader’s House" complex in the heart of the capital, including Khamenei's fortified underground bunker. While Washington and Tel Aviv maintain that the assassination was successful, Tehran has labeled the claims "psychological warfare," insisting that the leadership remains in command despite the total destruction of the headquarters.
Trump’s Announcement on Truth Social
Following initial cautious statements to NBC News, President Donald Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to explicitly announce the death of the Supreme Leader. Describing Khamenei as "one of the worst people in history," Trump stated that the assassination was a moment of justice for both the Iranian people and Americans.
Trump emphasized the role of U.S. technological superiority in the operation, asserting that Khamenei could not escape "High-Advanced Tracking Systems." In a direct appeal for an uprising, the President described this moment as the "single greatest chance" for Iranians to take back their country, while warning that "heavy and precision bombing will continue" until the mission's objectives are fully met.
Israeli Intel Claims Khamenei’s Body Recovered
Israeli security officials were the first to leak reports of Khamenei’s death to international media, claiming that his body had been recovered from the debris of the flattened complex. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported these claims in a national address, stating that the "tyrant's headquarters" had been destroyed and citing "increasing signs" that Khamenei is no longer alive.
Leading international outlets, including Reuters, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, have also cited Israeli intelligence sources confirming that the Supreme Leader’s body was found. According to these reports, intelligence photos of the deceased leader were presented to Netanyahu shortly after the strike concluded.
Tehran’s Defiant Denial and Internal Narrative
In stark contrast to the Western narrative, Iranian officials have categorically denied the reports of the assassination. Speaking to NBC News, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi referred to the status of both Khamenei and President Pezeşkiyan, stating, "As far as I know, they are alive."
Iranian state media outlets, such as Tasnim and Mehr, are currently broadcasting messages urging the public to ignore the "psychological warfare" of the enemy. Official broadcasts continue to claim that the "Leader of the Revolution is commanding the field with determination and firmness," although no recent footage of Khamenei has been released to corroborate these claims.
Implications of a Potential Power Vacuum
The ambiguity surrounding Khamenei’s status has placed the Middle East on a knife-edge. Experts suggest that "Operation Epic Fury" was strategically designed to paralyze Iran's decision-making hierarchy rather than just its military infrastructure. If the reports of his death are confirmed, the focus will shift to how the Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) manages a potential leadership vacuum.
Trump’s ultimatum to IRGC members—to either lay down their arms or face certain death—indicates that the U.S. is prepared for a prolonged campaign to ensure a total regime change. As the bombardment continues, the world awaits definitive proof of life or death from within the ruins of the Leader's House.
