Pornhub data breach: 200 million users' activity data at risk

Pornhub is currently investigating claims by the hacker group ShinyHunters, which asserts it has compromised sensitive activity data belonging to over 200 million Premium users.

The group is reportedly demanding a ransom, threatening to expose detailed user histories if the payment is not made. Pornhub has confirmed the incident but attributed the breach to a third-party analytics provider, Mixpanel, rather than its internal infrastructure. While the adult site emphasizes that passwords and financial data were not compromised, it acknowledged that the incident affected certain Premium users' analytical records. Mixpanel has denied any vulnerability in its systems, suggesting the data may have been accessed via authorized credentials.

Scope of the leaked behavior data

According to industry reports, the 94 GB dataset allegedly includes email addresses, viewing and downloading activities, location data, and specific timestamps of user actions. Security experts warn that the exposure of such behavioral data carries a high risk of blackmail and privacy violations due to the sensitive nature of the platform. The hacker group ShinyHunters is known for previous high-profile breaches targeting major corporations such as Google, AT&T, and Ticketmaster.

Security recommendations for users

Graeme Stewart of Check Point Software highlighted that behavioral data is as dangerous as financial information because it reveals personal interests and habits that remain in systems for years. While there is no evidence yet of public dissemination of the stolen data, experts advise users to be vigilant against individual extortion attempts and phishing scams tailored to their viewing habits. Pornhub stated that its investigation is ongoing and urged users to report any suspicious account activity.
