Russia hits 8 regions in massive attack on Ukraine energy grid

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Russian forces launched a massive overnight assault targeting energy facilities across eight regions, prompting an urgent appeal to international allies for expedited air defense support.

According to President Zelensky, the Russian military utilized approximately 300 drones—predominantly Shahed types—along with 18 ballistic and 7 cruise missiles during the operation. The strategic strikes primarily focused on energy production facilities and substations in the regions of Dnipropetrovsk, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Odesa, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Donetsk.

Civilian infrastructure and cargo terminals targeted

The President emphasized that the attacks lacked military justification, reporting a missile strike on a cargo terminal in the Korotych settlement of the Kharkiv region that killed 4 civilians. In the Kyiv region, hundreds of thousands of families are currently experiencing blackouts during freezing winter temperatures. Emergency crews are active on the ground, and "Resilience Centers" have been activated to provide warmth and power to affected citizens.

Call for uninterrupted air defense support

Zelensky issued a stark message to international partners, stressing that the supply of interceptor missiles for air defense systems must remain uninterrupted. In his official statement, the President noted:

"The world can respond to this Russian terror with new aid packages for Ukraine. We expect the delivery of shipments agreed upon with America and Europe to be accelerated. Russia must understand that the cold will not win this war."

240 drones and 7 missiles neutralized

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that their defense units successfully neutralized 240 drones, five "Iskander-K" cruise missiles, and two "Iskander-M" ballistic missiles overnight. Despite these interceptions, the density of the barrage resulted in significant damage to several power grid nodes, necessitating emergency measures across the central and eastern regions.
