Russia strikes Kyiv and Sumy following US-brokered peace talks

WISE NEWS PRESS / KYIV, Ukraine — Nov. 25, 2025

Russia launched a widespread wave of overnight air strikes targeting the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and the northeastern region of Sumy, damaging residential buildings and critical infrastructure just hours after high-level peace negotiations concluded in Geneva.

The attacks underscore the volatility of the conflict as it enters its fourth year, casting a shadow over US-led efforts to broker a ceasefire. While diplomats in Switzerland discussed terms to end the full-scale invasion, air raid sirens sounded across Ukraine, followed by confirmed reports of drone and missile impacts.

Damage to capital and energy grid

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko, the strikes caused significant damage in multiple districts of the capital. He confirmed that a residential building in the central Pechersk district and another in the Dniprovskyi district, located on the left bank of the Dnieper River, were heavily damaged.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy reported that energy infrastructure was also targeted in the overnight barrage but did not provide specific details regarding the extent of the destruction or potential power outages.

In the northeastern Sumy region, local officials reported that a Russian drone struck a service vehicle early Tuesday morning. This incident followed a series of attacks in the area that persisted late into Monday night.

Geneva talks and diplomatic stalemate

The intensification of military action coincides with a critical diplomatic push. On Sunday, US and Ukrainian representatives met in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss a peace plan mediated by the United States and Russia.

Oleksandr Bevz, a member of the Ukrainian delegation, described the discussions as "very constructive" in a statement to the Associated Press (AP) on Monday, noting that both parties were able to debate numerous points.

However, the path to an agreement remains uncertain. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Monday that Moscow had not yet seen the updated plan following the Geneva sessions, indicating a potential disconnect between the diplomatic track and the situation on the ground.
