MOSCOW, RUSSIA — Russian Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, the deputy head of the country's military intelligence agency (GRU), was critically wounded in a targeted shooting at his Moscow apartment on Feb. 6, sparking a major security investigation.

The high-profile assassination attempt targets one of Russia's most influential military figures, known for his role in the 2023 Wagner Group negotiations and his oversight of intelligence operations in Ukraine and Syria.

Attack details and condition

According to Russian state media, the assailant opened fire inside Alekseyev's apartment building before fleeing the scene. The general was rushed to a hospital where he remains in serious condition.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that President Vladimir Putin has been briefed on the incident. While law enforcement agencies have launched a manhunt for the unidentified shooter, the ease with which the attacker accessed the residence of a high-ranking official has triggered intense criticism from pro-Kremlin military bloggers regarding security protocols.

Key role in Wagner negotiations

Alekseyev is a prominent figure within the Russian security establishment. He gained significant public attention during the 2023 mutiny by the Wagner paramilitary group, where he served as one of the primary negotiators sent to bargain with Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin.

Beyond his domestic roles, intelligence sources identify Alekseyev as the former head of Russian military intelligence in Syria. He is also believed to be a central architect behind Russia's hybrid warfare and intelligence operations in Ukraine.

International sanctions and allegations

The general's dossier extends to high-level international controversies. Alekseyev, who was born in Ukraine during the Soviet era, was sanctioned by the United States for his alleged involvement in cyber interference during the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Furthermore, the European Union imposed sanctions on him in connection with the 2018 poisoning of Russian double agent Sergei Skripal in Salisbury, UK. Despite these international condemnations, he holds the title of "Hero of Russia," the country's highest honorary award.
