Trump and Zelenskyy meet in Florida for historic peace talks
US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy meet at Mar-a-Lago to discuss a 20-point peace plan, security guarantees, and territorial integrity.
WISE NEWS PRESS / FLORIDA, USA — DEC. 29, 2025
Following weeks of intense diplomatic coordination between Kyiv and Washington, US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are meeting this Sunday in Florida.
The high-stakes summit, held at the Mar-a-Lago estate during the final days of 2025, aims to lay the groundwork for a peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine. Both leaders expressed optimism ahead of the talks, with Trump stating that the prospects for peace are "high."
Security Guarantees and Economic Cooperation
President Zelenskyy revealed that negotiation teams have already prepared several draft documents to be reviewed during the meeting. He emphasized that security guarantees and bilateral economic cooperation are "bilateral matters" that do not require Moscow's approval. Zelenskyy noted that the agreement on security guarantees is "nearly ready" and expressed his readiness to initial the document during the summit.
The Territorial Dispute and Zaporizhzhia
Zelenskyy clarified that while 90% of his 20-point peace plan is complete, the remaining issues regarding territorial integrity and the future of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) remain the most challenging.
-
Territorial Issues: Russia continues to demand that Ukraine abandon parts of the Donbas region that are not yet under Moscow’s control. Kyiv has rejected this, proposing instead that such areas be demilitarized and placed under international supervision.
-
Nuclear Safety: Regarding the ZNPP, the US has proposed a consortium that would include Russia as an equal partner. However, Zelenskyy is advocating for a US-Ukraine partnership, allowing Washington to decide how to delegate its share.
Russia Responds with Missile Strikes
The diplomatic atmosphere was clouded by a massive Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv just hours before the summit. The 10-hour assault resulted in casualties and significant damage. "Russia showed today how it responds to peace talks with the US," Zelenskyy said in response to the escalation.
President Trump, speaking to the New York Post, reiterated his belief that both sides want an end to the conflict but acknowledged the difficulties in aligning their specific demands.
