Trump warns Colombia of potential intervention: Led by a sick man

WISE NEWS PRESS / WASHINGTON, USA — JANUARY 05, 2026

US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to the Colombian government, describing the nation as being "led by a sick man" and suggesting that a military operation in the country "sounds good" following the recent US intervention in Venezuela.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while returning to Washington from Florida, Trump defended the military move against Nicolas Maduro, characterizing Venezuela as a "narco-terror state". The President emphasized that the intervention was necessary to stop the flow of drugs into the United States and asserted that the US is now effectively in charge of the nation’s future.

Strategic Control of Venezuelan Oil

President Trump made it clear that American interests, particularly in the energy sector, are the top priority in the post-Maduro era. He stated that major American oil firms are prepared to invest billions of dollars to rebuild the country's infrastructure.

"Venezuela is currently a dead country. We must revive it," Trump remarked, adding that the US reserves the right to use Venezuelan oil as it sees fit. Regarding the current administration in Caracas, Trump noted that while he has not yet spoken with Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, his cabinet remains in close contact with her. He reiterated his warning that if Rodriguez acts against US interests, she will face a "worse fate than Maduro".

"A Colombia Operation Sounds Good"

Turning his attention to other regional neighbors, Trump delivered a scathing critique of Colombia and Mexico. He claimed that Mexico is currently ruled by drug cartels and revealed that he offered to send US troops to help President Claudia Sheinbaum restore order.

Regarding Colombia, Trump was even more direct, stating that the current leadership "won't last long". When asked about the possibility of a military strike similar to the one in Venezuela, Trump responded, "A Colombia operation sounds good".

Global Diplomacy and the Putin-Ukraine Allegations

Beyond South America, Trump addressed several high-profile international issues:

  • Russia-Ukraine: Trump expressed deep skepticism regarding claims that Ukraine attacked President Vladimir Putin's residence, stating, "I don't believe this attack happened".

  • China Relations: The President confirmed he maintains a positive relationship with President Xi Jinping and announced a planned visit to China in April.

  • Iran Protests: Trump warned the Iranian government that any violent crackdown on protesters would result in "severe punishment" by the United States.
