ISTANBUL, TURKEY — Dietitian Sinem TÜRKMEN from Memorial Şişli Hospital's Nutrition and Diet Department announced that modern lifestyle habits are increasingly putting children at risk of Type 2 diabetes as early as their preteens.

What was once known primarily as an adult disease is now shifting to childhood due to excessive consumption of carbonated drinks, sedentary lifestyles, long screen times, and changing family dietary habits. Experts emphasize that early preventive measures are critical to minimizing chronic disease risks in adulthood.

The danger of sugary drinks and insulin resistance

Recent trends show a significant increase in children's consumption of carbonated drinks, colorful snacks, flavored beverages, and milk with additives. Experts point out that these industrial products, which children love to consume, often act as "hidden sugar depots" that overload the body.

A single can of carbonated beverage presented in attractive packaging can contain between 7 to 10 teaspoons of added sugar. Regular consumption causes rapid weight gain and leads the pancreas to overproduce insulin, paving the way for cellular insulin resistance. If not broken, this resistance directly progresses to a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis.

Parents' plates serve as nutritional guides

Parents have significant responsibilities in controlling and changing unhealthy eating habits that are becoming increasingly common among children. The solution often lies directly inside the home and in the kitchen. Instead of sugary drinks from market shelves, homemade lemonade, freshly squeezed fruit juice, natural yogurt without additives, and fresh fruit purees prepared without added sugar are much healthier and more nutritious alternatives.

Children are known to pay attention to their parents' plates, using them as their biggest role models. As families consume vegetables, fresh fruits, protein-rich legumes, and whole grains more frequently, children quickly adopt these foods and make them a permanent part of their lives.

Avoid high-calorie rewards on special occasions

Sitting down at the table together is one of the strongest steps to help children acquire correct and balanced eating behaviors. However, families often prefer high-calorie, excessively fatty foods such as pizza, hamburgers, french fries, and acidic beverages on special occasions like celebrations or as rewards.

Experts warn that such approaches may lead children to directly associate these unhealthy foods with emotional states in their later years. Pointing out that the foundation of emotional eating disorders is laid in childhood, TÜRKMEN stated that healthy and nutritious foods can easily be a part of special moments and celebrations, and this misconception within families needs to be broken.

Limit screen time to increase physical activity

Along with a healthy and balanced diet, physical activity is just as important in preventing diabetes. In today's modern world, children spend hours in front of computers, tablets, and television screens at home instead of playing outside with their peers. This situation brings about a serious physical inactivity epidemic and dangerous weight gain.

Growing children need to be physically active at a moderate to vigorous intensity for at least 60 minutes every day. Depending on the child's interests, various options such as brisk walking, dancing, jumping rope, swimming, or cycling can be recommended. These physical activities balance blood sugar and provide invaluable benefits for their physical, mental, and cognitive health.

The role of regular sleep in hormonal balance

Another critical issue often overlooked in combating childhood diabetes risk is sleep patterns and quality. Insufficient, fragmented, or poor-quality sleep can disrupt the balance of basic hormones that manage metabolism in children, just as it does in adults.

Going to bed very late, long-term exposure to screens emitting blue light before bed, and irregular sleep habits rank high among the hidden factors that reduce the body's insulin sensitivity. For this reason, it is highly recommended to strictly adhere to the daily sleep duration appropriate for children's age groups and turn off all digital screens at least one hour before bedtime for a quality transition to sleep.

Early diagnosis stops disease progression

Families who instill healthy eating behaviors, encourage their children to exercise, and appropriately limit screen time open the door to a healthy future free from diseases. Physical symptoms such as frequent hunger, an insatiable craving for sweets, unexplained rapid weight gain or loss, excessive thirst, and frequent urination could be early signals of Type 2 diabetes.

In such cases, consulting a pediatrician or endocrinologist without delay and getting a simple fasting blood sugar test is vital for early diagnosis and halting the progression of the disease. It should not be forgotten that every healthy habit properly acquired and internalized during childhood is the strongest and most permanent investment that drastically reduces the risk of diabetes, obesity, and heart diseases in adulthood.
