Turkey's Defense Ministry denies reports of Syria operation preparation

WISE NEWS PRESS / ANKARA, TURKEY — DEC. 08, 2025

The Turkish Ministry of National Defense has addressed recent social media speculation regarding a potential new military operation in Syria, characterizing the observed movements as standard procedure.

Speaking to Cumhuriyet newspaper, ministry sources responded to claims that the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) were intensifying activities and preparing for an offensive against the SDF. "It is a routine activity, there is nothing else," the sources stated, downplaying the significance of the footage circulating online.

Footage Sparks Speculation

The clarification comes after videos shared late yesterday purportedly showed Turkish military convoys entering Syria through Afrin, Ras al-Ayn, and north of Aleppo. The claims suggested convoys were moving toward Manbij and Aleppo, with one entering via the Advaniyah border gate.

These reports emerged amidst ongoing uncertainty regarding the integration of the PKK-linked SDF into the Syrian army, a year after the fall of the Assad regime.

Regional Tensions

Parallel to the rumors of Turkish movements, reports also indicated that Syrian government forces were reinforcing the Deir ez-Zor region with artillery systems and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Speculation about a new operation was further fueled by the recent visit of Turkish Chief of General Staff Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu to Syria on Dec. 5-6. However, defense officials maintain that the current situation does not deviate from standard operational patterns.
