Turkey’s First Veiled Governor Appointed Deputy Interior Minister

ANKARA, TURKEY —  President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has officially appointed Kübra Güran Yiğitbaşı, formerly the Governor of Afyonkarahisar, as the new Deputy Minister of Interior following a presidential decree published in the Official Gazette. This appointment marks a significant reorganization of senior leadership within both the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Justice as the administration restructures its top-level executive cadres.

The changes follow the recent replacement of the Ministers of Interior and Justice, leading to an expected shift among their deputies.

Extensive leadership shuffle in the Interior Ministry

Under the Ministry of Interior, three current deputy ministers—Münir Karaloğlu, Mehmet Sağlam, and Mehmet Aktaş—were dismissed from their posts by presidential order. In their place, the President has appointed Hakkari Governor Ali Çelik, Afyonkarahisar Governor Kübra Güran Yiğitbaşı, and Mehmet Cangir as the new Deputy Ministers.

A notable exception in this reshuffle is Bülent Turan, who maintained his position as Deputy Minister of Interior despite high-profile administrative tensions reported during the tenure of the previous minister. Turan remains the only deputy from the previous team to retain his seat in the ministry.

Broad changes at the Ministry of Justice

A parallel restructuring occurred at the Ministry of Justice, where four deputy ministers—Ramazan Can, Hurşit Yıldırım, Mehmet Yılmaz, and Niyazi Acar—were removed from their duties. To fill these vacancies, Abdullah Aydoğdu, Burak Ceyhan, Can Tuncay, and Sedat Ayyıldız have been named as the new Deputy Ministers of Justice.

Akın Gürlek, the recently appointed Minister of Justice, welcomed the new team members and expressed his gratitude to the departing officials for their state service. These appointments allow both Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi and Justice Minister Akın Gürlek to finalize their own leadership teams.

Professional background of Kübra Güran Yiğitbaşı

Born in Ankara in 1979, Kübra Güran Yiğitbaşı graduated from Ankara University's Faculty of Communication before earning her PhD at Marmara University with a thesis focused on political message design. She previously served as the Deputy Minister of Family and Social Services before becoming a historic figure in 2022 as the first veiled provincial governor in the history of the Republic of Turkey.

Beyond her administrative career, Yiğitbaşı is known for her academic contributions and documentary work, including "Kalplerin Direnişi," which examined the role of women during the July 15 coup attempt. Her new role as Deputy Minister of Interior places her at the heart of national security and local administration management.
