ANKARA, TURKEY — Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenskyy has called for the creation of a new military alliance including Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and Norway to ensure European security as an alternative to NATO.

Speaking on Alastair Campbell’s "The Rest is Politics" podcast, Zelenskyy argued that Europe's defense architecture is unsustainable without the strategic military involvement of Turkey and Ukraine. According to reports by Sözcü, the Ukrainian leader emphasized that amidst shifting political dynamics in the United States and threats regarding NATO’s future, Europe must maximize its collective power by forming a new deterrent bloc.

A Strategic Alternative to NATO

Zelenskyy proposed that the European Union must join forces with non-EU military powers like the UK, Turkey, and Norway to create a military bloc large enough to deter Russia. He noted that without the inclusion of these specific nations, Europe would struggle to match the military capacity possessed by the Russian army.

The Ukrainian leader highlighted the importance of sea security as a cornerstone of this proposed alliance. "Without Ukraine and Turkey, Europe cannot have an army like Russia’s," Zelenskyy stated. He argued that by uniting with Norway and the UK, these partners would control not just a single sea, but global maritime security relevant to the continent’s protection.

Turkey's Vital Role in Continental Defense

The proposal positions Turkey as a central pillar of European stability. Zelenskyy made it clear that European defense "passes through Turkey," suggesting that the combined air, land, and sea capabilities of the four mentioned countries would create an insurmountable wall against aggression.

During the interview, the Ukrainian leader also reaffirmed his confidence that Ukraine would eventually join the European Union. He stressed that his country is already prepared to take on the responsibility of protecting the continent alongside its strategic partners.

Critique of US Policy and Regional Ties

Zelenskyy also addressed current international relations, specifically criticizing the recent actions of US Vice President J.D. Vance. He characterized Vance’s visit to Budapest to support Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as unhelpful to European unity and security.

Despite the criticism of regional diplomatic moves, Zelenskyy maintained a stance of non-interference regarding Hungary's internal politics. He stated that he has no intention of interfering in upcoming elections, noting that the decision of which party to support belongs solely to the Hungarian people. His remarks underscore a growing push for a self-sufficient European security framework led by key regional powers.
