Çeksan Shipyard: Six decades of Turkish maritime craftsmanship going global

WISE NEWS PRESS / ISTANBUL, TURKEY — Nov. 22, 2025

Çeksan Shipyard, one of Turkey's most established maritime brands, is marking a significant legacy of over 60 years in the industry. With a track record of delivering more than 80 vessels worldwide—ranging from chemical tankers to advanced ferries—the company continues to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern technology at its Tuzla Bay facilities.

Currently managed by the third generation of the founding Bayrak family, Çeksan has evolved from a local workshop into a global exporter, capable of processing 7,500 tons of steel annually and executing complex newbuilding and conversion projects.

From the Golden Horn to the world

The company’s journey began in 1960 at Istanbul’s historic Golden Horn, where founder Habip Bayrak started constructing and maintaining small wooden and steel vessels. As the industry evolved, so did Çeksan; the company shifted entirely to steel shipbuilding in 1979 and relocated to its current strategic hub in Tuzla Bay in 1986.

This expansion allowed for rapid growth throughout the 1990s. Today, the shipyard spans 17,000 square meters and is equipped with a 5,000-ton lifting capacity floating dock, a 132-meter slipway, and fully equipped workshops featuring CNC plasma cutting and automated welding machines.

Newbuilding excellence and capacity

Çeksan has positioned itself as a versatile builder, certified by leading classification societies such as DNV, BV, and TL. The shipyard is capable of building and repairing vessels up to 25,000 DWT (Deadweight tonnage), with a specific focus on newbuilding projects up to 10,000 DWT.

Notable vessels in their portfolio include the Atalay, İlhan Bayrak, Başaran Bayrak, as well as international projects like Skrova and Færøysund.

"Guided by a customer-first approach, Çeksan is your trusted partner for building the future of the seven seas," the company stated in its mission profile, emphasizing its commitment to on-time delivery and cost-effectiveness.

Infrastructure and technology

To maintain its competitive edge, the shipyard continues to invest in infrastructure. The facility includes closed production areas of 2,000 square meters, cranes with lifting capacities up to 100 tons, and a rail-mounted transport system to streamline logistics within the yard.

With a focus on quality, efficiency, and reliability, Çeksan Shipyard remains a testament to the resilience and growth of the Turkish shipbuilding sector.
