Civilian toll rises in Russian drone attacks on Ukraine, strikes hit Black Sea oil terminal

WISE NEWS PRESS / KYIV, UKRAINE — DEC. 1, 2025

At least one person was killed and dozens injured as Russia launched a massive drone and missile attack on the Kyiv region overnight, while Ukrainian forces struck back with a targeted operation against a major Russian oil terminal in the Black Sea.

The intensifying aerial assaults come as both sides brace for a potential fourth winter of warfare, with Moscow targeting Ukraine's energy grid and Kyiv aiming to disrupt Russian oil logistics.

Casualties in the capital region

Russian forces targeted Vyshhorod, just north of Kyiv, leaving one person dead and 19 injured, including children. Emergency services evacuated 146 residents from a high-rise building damaged in the attack, with rescue operations continuing throughout the night.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting 104 of the 122 drones launched by Russia. Additionally, two ballistic missiles were fired from occupied Crimea. Over the past 24 hours, the death toll across Ukraine has risen to at least five, with 39 injured.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that falling debris from intercepted drones hit residential buildings, injuring 29 people in the capital and causing power outages in the western districts.

Strike on Novorossiysk oil terminal

In a significant counter-operation, a major oil terminal near the Russian port of Novorossiysk suspended operations Saturday after being hit by Ukrainian naval drones. The Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) confirmed damage to one of its three mooring points but stated that an oil spill was avoided.

Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, confirmed Ukrainian responsibility.

"Ukrainian special forces worked on the Russian Federation, the energy sector and infrastructure," Kovalenko said. "Specifically, naval drones managed to destroy one of the three oil tanker berths of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium."

Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) sources indicated the attack targeted two Russian "shadow fleet" tankers, the Kairos and Virat. The terminal is a critical export point, handling about 80% of Kazakhstan's oil, prompting a diplomatic protest note from the Kazakh Foreign Ministry to Ukraine.

New sanctions and diplomatic moves

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced two new sanctions packages against 26 Russian entities connected to the energy sector, including Rosneft and Lukoil subsidiaries. The measures were synchronized with recent U.S. sanctions targeting Russian oil production.

"These include Rosneft, its enterprises, and companies within the Lukoil Group," Zelenskyy's office stated.

The escalation occurs as Trump administration officials reportedly met with Ukrainian negotiators in Florida this weekend, preparing the ground for upcoming high-stakes talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
