Zelenskyy to meet Macron in Paris: Peace talks and security agenda
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy arrives in Paris today to discuss a "just and lasting peace" with President Macron, coinciding with a review of the new American peace plan.
WISE NEWS PRESS / PARIS, FRANCE — DEC. 1, 2025
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to arrive in Paris on Monday for high-stakes talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, focusing on the conditions for a "just and lasting peace" amid evolving diplomatic efforts in Washington and Geneva.
The visit occurs at a critical juncture in the conflict, as Kyiv reviews a new American peace proposal and Western allies coordinate their long-term security commitments to Ukraine.
Coordinating the peace strategy
According to the Élysée Palace, the two leaders will discuss the situation "within the framework of the Geneva talks and the American plan," while maintaining "close coordination with our European partners."
The timing is significant; a Ukrainian delegation is currently in the United States to discuss the details of a U.S.-brokered peace roadmap. Zelenskyy had previously stated he expected to receive a report on this plan by Sunday. Following these consultations, American negotiators are reportedly scheduled to visit Moscow later this week.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot confirmed the visit to local media, stating, "We will welcome President Zelenskyy in Paris on Monday to move the negotiations forward."
"Peace is possible"
Minister Barrot struck a cautiously optimistic tone regarding the diplomatic push, though he emphasized that the ball remains in the Kremlin's court.
"Peace is possible," Barrot said, "provided that Vladimir Putin first gives up his dream of re-establishing the Soviet Empire by subjugating Ukraine."
This diplomatic flurry follows a meeting of the "coalition of willing countries" on Tuesday, demonstrating a continued European resolve to play a central role in any future settlement.
Defense cooperation
Beyond the immediate peace talks, the leaders are expected to address ongoing defense cooperation. Zelenskyy recently visited France to strengthen military ties, a partnership that has included significant hardware and training support.
Reports indicate that discussions may also touch upon the potential acquisition of Rafale fighter jets, as Ukraine seeks to modernize its air force to secure its skies during both war and peace.
