Kadir Özkaya, the President of Turkey's Constitutional Court (AYM), experienced an emotional moment during a speech at Malatya İnönü University's academic opening ceremony last week. Özkaya emphasized that justice is not merely a concept sought in courtrooms but a deeply moral and ethical guide.
The AYM President defined justice as "a guiding value, a moral compass in every area of life, in human existence, the order of society, and the functioning of the state."
Breaking Down on Stage
While speaking about the immense responsibility of his profession and the final judgment, Özkaya became visibly emotional. His voice choked as he began a religious sentiment regarding accountability:
"Let us live in such a way that when the time comes, may God Almighty not call us to account with anyone's... [debt of injustice]."
Özkaya was unable to complete the sentence, with the audience responding with applause to support the highly-ranked judge.
Later, Özkaya described the judiciary as a profession where one side is "nur" (divine light/heaven) and the other is "nar" (fire/hell).
"That is, one side is paradise, and one side is hell. I fear when I come to this saying. May God Almighty not call us to His presence with anyone's rights [unpaid]," he stated.
Özkaya used the moment to emphasize the profound ethical burden carried by members of the judiciary.
