DEM Party delegation meets Öcalan on Imrali amid peace process talks

WISE NEWS PRESS / BURSA, Türkiye — Dec. 2, 2025

A delegation from the pro-Kurdish DEM Party, including MPs Pervin Buldan and Mithat Sancar along with lawyer Faik Özgür Erol, visited PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan on Imrali Island today.

The visit comes at a critical juncture in the renewed peace process discussions in Turkey. It follows a recent statement by PKK leadership in Kandil to AFP, asserting that "no further steps will be taken" unless Öcalan's freedom is secured.

Second contact after parliamentary commission

This visit marks the second contact since Nov. 3. Previously, on Nov. 24, a parliamentary "process commission" delegation—comprising representatives from the ruling AKP, MHP, and DEM Party—visited Öcalan. Notably, the main opposition CHP did not participate in that delegation.

Details from the commission's visit are expected to be shared with the parliament on Thursday, Dec. 4.

Öcalan calls for legal framework

During his meeting with the commission, Öcalan reportedly emphasized the necessity of enacting a "process law" without delay to secure the steps taken towards disarmament. He also criticized the CHP's absence from the committee.

While the PKK announced a decision on May 12, 2025, to end the armed struggle and dissolve itself, recent statements from the organization highlight that the process hinges heavily on the conditions of Öcalan's confinement.
