Erdoğan and Putin discuss sensitive issues and Ukraine in Turkmenistan

WISE NEWS PRESS / ASHGABAT, TURKMENISTAN — DEC. 15, 2025

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a comprehensive meeting in Turkmenistan, lasting approximately one and a half hours, to address what the Kremlin described as "very sensitive issues" regarding regional stability and finance.

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov provided details regarding the closed-door interaction, noting that the leaders focused heavily on the ongoing situation in Ukraine and the vulnerabilities of the international financial system. The meeting underscores the continued high-level dialogue between Ankara and Moscow despite the complex geopolitical landscape.

'Very sensitive issues' on the table

When asked by reporters about the extended duration of the meeting, Peskov explained that the length was necessitated by the critical nature of the topics at hand. "Of course, they are discussing very sensitive issues," Peskov stated. "It is often difficult to keep track of time in such meetings".

The spokesman noted that the intense schedule created time pressure, as President Putin was scheduled to meet with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif immediately following his talks with Erdoğan.

Focus on Ukraine and global finance

According to the Kremlin, the two leaders engaged in a detailed discussion regarding the conflict in Ukraine. Furthermore, they found common ground regarding the risks posed to the global financial architecture, specifically criticizing attempts by European nations to seize Russian assets.

Peskov emphasized that there are no serious problems in relations between Moscow and Ankara. He highlighted that the two leaders maintain a "constant and intense" line of communication and have extended invitations to visit each other’s countries, dismissing any notion of a lack of dialogue.
