EU responds to US 'extinction' claim: Still our top ally

WISE NEWS PRESS / DOHA, QATAR — Dec. 6, 2025

European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas stated that the United States remains Europe's most important ally, despite a harsh strategy document from the White House describing Europe as an "undemocratic" structure facing the "risk of civilization extinction."

Speaking at the Doha Forum in Qatar, Kallas delivered messages aimed at de-escalating tensions between Washington and Brussels. Her remarks followed the release of the US administration's new "National Security Strategy" on Thursday evening, which sent shockwaves through European capitals.

"Criticisms with a grain of truth"

Kallas engaged in self-criticism, acknowledging that some of the heavy accusations leveled by the US contained a "grain of truth." Stating, "When we look at Europe, we see that it underestimates its own power against Russia," Kallas noted that the continent needs to adopt a more self-confident stance.

Reminding that there is not always consensus with Washington on every issue, the EU High Representative said, "But I believe the fundamental principle still exists. We are each other's most important allies and we must depend on each other."

US document: "European civilization at risk"

The document published by the White House targets supra-national structures like the EU and the Council of Europe with harsh language. It claims that "European civilization is at risk of extinction" and warns that the continent could lose its status as a reliable ally. Additionally, referencing demographic changes in some NATO countries, the document includes controversial statements suggesting that "in the long term, the majority of the population will not be of European descent."

Harsh reaction from European politicians

In contrast to Kallas's moderate tone, experienced European politicians reacted sharply to the document. Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt likened the language in the document to "weird minds in the Kremlin," arguing that the text sits to the right of even the far-right in Europe.

Former Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins told Reuters, "Moscow has been trying to break the alliance for years. Now it seems that the biggest cause of malfunction in this alliance is, sadly, the US itself." Political analysts interpret the silence of current European leaders as a strategy to avoid entering a direct polemic with the US President.
