Expert Warns Ukraine Drone Strikes Paralyzing Russian Economy

WASHINGTON, USA — International relations expert and academic Sedat Laçiner stated that Ukraine's asymmetric drone warfare targeting Russia's economic infrastructure is causing billions of dollars in damage.

In his latest analysis, Laçiner detailed how Kyiv's shift to targeting oil refineries and e-commerce giant Wildberries has triggered a deep economic crisis in Russia. He warned that these systematic strikes could lead to a severe economic collapse by late 2026 or early 2027.

Refineries Face Over 40 Percent Capacity Loss

According to Laçiner, Ukraine is closing the military gap by using autonomous weapons and hit-and-run drone tactics. More than 40 percent of Russia's oil refineries have been rendered inoperative due to these operations. This structural damage has forced Russia, one of the world's largest energy producers, to implement fuel rationing and import fuel. The fuel shortage has significantly increased transportation costs, fueling inflation across the country.

E-Commerce Giant Wildberries Targeted

The expert highlighted that Ukraine's new target over the past two weeks is Wildberries, known as the "Amazon of Russia," which generated $78 billion in revenue in 2025. Drone strikes hit four massive warehouses, killing at least nine employees and reducing billions of dollars worth of inventory to ashes. Rebuilding the destroyed facilities is expected to cost the company approximately $500 million.

Small Businesses on the Brink of Bankruptcy

Laçiner emphasized that these attacks have devastated nearly 100,000 small businesses operating on the platform. Thousands of merchants who lost their goods are on the verge of bankruptcy, realizing the state will not help them. Notably, Wildberries added a clause to its contracts just two weeks before the attacks, stating that no compensation would be paid for drone strikes. The Moscow administration also announced it would not provide financial aid to these civilian businesses. This situation indicates a massive psychological shift, as every company in Russia now expects a drone strike.

Retaliation Claims and Civilian Casualties

Analyzing the justifications for the attacks, Laçiner noted that Kyiv defends these operations by claiming retaliation for Russian strikes on the Ukrainian postal service Nova Pochta. Additionally, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused the Wildberries logistics network of supplying drone components, navigation equipment, and military gear to the Russian army. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov strictly denied these allegations, calling them nonsense.

The Future of the War and Economic Crisis

The academic pointed out that both sides are increasingly targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure. He cited a daytime Russian missile strike on a defense exhibition in Kyiv that killed at least 10 people and injured 100. Concurrently, Ukraine continues to strike targets in Belgorod, St. Petersburg, Leningrad, and Simferopol. Highlighting that the conflict is in its 1613th day and fifth year, Laçiner referenced US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's statement that while the US is ready to mediate, peace is not visible in the near future. Laçiner concluded that if the drone strikes continue at this intensity, the Russian economy will face a massive crisis, which could lead to unexpected social and political unrest.
