BANDAR ABBAS, IRAN — An explosion at an eight-story building in Bandar Abbas, southern Iran, caused two floors to collapse on Saturday, damaging nearby shops and vehicles while triggering immediate evacuations.

The blast occurred on the busy Moallem Boulevard in the coastal city located on the Persian Gulf. While the official cause of the explosion has not yet been determined by the authorities, emergency response units, including search-and-rescue and fire crews, were dispatched to the scene immediately to secure the perimeter.

Official response to targeted attack rumors

Following the incident, unverified reports circulated on social media suggesting that the blast may have targeted a high-ranking commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy. However, the semi-official Tasnim News Agency denied these claims, describing them as "completely baseless."

According to state media, no military personnel or officials were involved in the incident. Officials confirmed that all residents of the damaged building were safely evacuated, and a detailed forensic investigation has been launched to determine if the explosion was caused by a technical failure or an external factor.

Military alertness in the Persian Gulf

The explosion takes place amid a period of heightened regional tension. General Amir Hatami, the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, commented on the general security situation shortly after the event, referencing the significant U.S. military presence in the Gulf region.

General Hatami stated that the armed forces remain in a state of "full defense and military alert" against potential external threats. While the general did not directly link the Bandar Abbas explosion to foreign intervention, his comments underscored the sensitive security environment currently prevailing in southern Iran.

Emergency response and damage assessment

Images broadcast by state television showed structural damage to the middle floors of the building, with debris scattered across the boulevard. Municipal authorities reported that several commercial shops on the ground floor and parked vehicles suffered extensive damage due to the shockwave. Firefighters successfully extinguished small blazes ignited by the blast, and structural engineers are currently evaluating whether the remaining parts of the building are at risk of a total collapse.
