NOTTINGHAM, ENGLAND — Fenerbahçe is currently leading Nottingham Forest 2-1 in the second leg of the UEFA Europa League round of 16 play-off, fighting to overturn a three-goal first-leg deficit.
After losing the initial encounter 3-0 in Istanbul, the Yellow-Navy Blues entered the City Ground with high intensity. The match, which saw a brief interruption in the opening minutes due to objects thrown onto the pitch, has become a high-stakes battle. Kerem Aktürkoğlu has emerged as the protagonist for the Turkish side, scoring both goals to keep Fenerbahçe’s hopes of advancing alive as the game progresses into the latter stages of the second half.
Aktürkoğlu’s double gives Fenerbahçe hope
Fenerbahçe broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute following a swift counter-attack led by Sidiki Cherif. Cherif found Kerem Aktürkoğlu inside the box, who controlled the ball expertly before clinical finish to make it 1-0. The goal shifted the momentum, forcing Nottingham Forest to defend deeper as the visitors searched for more.
The second half began with immediate drama when Aktürkoğlu was brought down in the penalty area just 60 seconds after the restart. The referee pointed to the spot, and Aktürkoğlu converted the penalty in the 48th minute, doubling the lead on the night and bringing the aggregate score to 3-2.
Forest responds through Hudson-Odoi
Despite Fenerbahçe's dominance, Nottingham Forest managed to pull a goal back in the 68th minute. Callum Hudson-Odoi found space within the penalty area and fired a precise shot into the net, making the score 2-1 on the night. This goal restored Forest's two-goal cushion on aggregate (4-2), forcing Fenerbahçe to score at least twice more to take the tie into extra time.
