From child star to ClubHouse scandal: The untold story of Menderes Utku

By Ahmet Taş | Wise News Press

ISTANBUL, TURKEY — Menderes Utku, the operator of the popular venue ClubHouse, has been arrested and sent to prison as part of a recent drug operation. While today his name is associated with criminal allegations, Utku's life story traces a remarkable trajectory from being the beloved child star of 1970s Turkish cinema to a prominent figure in the business and nightlife sectors.

According to a report by Toygun Atilla in Patronlar Dünyası, Utku's background reveals deep ties to both the Turkish film industry and political circles, painting a complex portrait of the man now at the center of a narcotics investigation.

A family of cinema and politics

Menderes Utku is the son of Ümit Utku, the founder of Kervan Film and a significant producer in the Yeşilçam era. His father was not only a cinema mogul but also a well-known figure in nationalist circles, maintaining a close friendship with Alparslan Türkeş, the founder of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

The family's connections extend further into the elite of Turkish cinema. Utku's aunt, Aysel İnanoğlu, was the wife of Berker İnanoğlu, the boss of Erler Film, linking Menderes Utku to one of the most powerful dynasties in the industry.

"Afacan" to Camel Trophy

Publicly, Menderes Utku first gained fame in the 1970s as "Afacan," a mischievous child character that became a staple of Turkish comedy films. However, he did not remain in the shadow of his childhood fame. By the 1990s, he had reinvented himself as an adventurer, representing Turkey in the grueling Camel Trophy off-road competitions.

In the 2000s, Utku shifted gears again, becoming a key player in the modernization of Turkey's cinema infrastructure. As part of the Mars Entertainment Group, he played a decisive role in the transition of movie theaters into shopping mall complexes.

High-profile partnerships and relationships

In recent years, Utku has been active in the entertainment and service sector, frequently mentioned in partnership with Muzaffer Yıldırım, the owner of the Bebek Hotel. Most recently, this partnership focused on the management of ClubHouse, the venue now embroiled in controversy.

Utku’s personal life has also drawn media attention in the past, particularly his seven-year relationship with Güllü Aybar. This relationship was notable for its political contrast; Utku was the son of a father close to the nationalist leader Alparslan Türkeş, while Aybar was the daughter of Mehmet Ali Aybar, the leader of the Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP).

Legal process underway

While Menderes Utku is currently in custody, the judicial process is ongoing. As emphasized in the initial reports, the presumption of innocence remains until a final verdict is reached. However, the arrest marks a dramatic turn for a figure whose life has spanned the heights of celebrity, business success, and high-society connections.
