MARDIN, TURKEY — A giant Turkish flag was raised on a 30-meter-high pole at the Nusaybin-Qamishli border after a recent attack targeted the national symbol in a defunct customs area.
Following the provocation by YPG supporters on January 20, the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) incorporated the old customs site into the perimeter of the Martyr Infantry Contractual Corporal Faruk Gezen Border Post. The move aims to secure the strategic point located in the Nusaybin district of Mardin, directly across from the Syrian city of Qamishli.
Military Control Established over Customs Site
The TSK’s closest border unit took full control of the previously unused customs area to prevent further violations. By bringing the site within the official military post boundaries, security forces have established a permanent presence to monitor activities along the sensitive border line.
30-Meter Monumental Flag
After implementing necessary security measures, a 30-meter-long flagpole was installed at the point closest to the Syrian border. A massive Turkish flag was hoisted, serving as a prominent landmark visible from both sides of the frontier. Local business owners clarified that the initial attack had no connection to the local community, denouncing the actions of cross-border groups.
