Trump's Iran reaction questions US and Israel war alignment

WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES — Following reciprocal energy facility strikes between Israel and Iran, US President Donald Trump's assertion that Washington had no prior knowledge has raised serious questions about US-Israeli coordination.

The mutual attacks, which triggered a sudden spike in global energy prices, and Trump's subsequent harsh reactions on social media have sparked intense debates over whether the two close allies are truly aligned on their strategies and ultimate goals in the ongoing Iranian war.

Contradictory claims of "no knowledge"

According to BBC News, President Trump claimed that his administration had absolutely no prior knowledge of the Israeli strike on Iran's massive South Pars natural gas field. However, this statement overtly contradicts multiple reports published in the Israeli media immediately following the attack.

The center-left Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper claimed that the attack was coordinated with the US in advance and decided upon jointly by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Trump. Meanwhile, the right-wing Israel Hayom newspaper reported that Trump had discussed the anticipated strike with the leaders of three Gulf countries over the weekend. Furthermore, Trump's use of words like "anger" and "violence" to describe Israel's attack—terms rarely utilized for allied military operations—was interpreted by analysts as a sign of frustration with the Netanyahu administration.

Diverging targets: Regime change vs. capacity degradation

While Alex Gandler, a spokesperson for the Israeli Embassy in London, emphasized that the two countries are in complete alignment regarding Iran's nuclear programs and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, actions on the ground indicate distinctly different priorities.

Israel views the South Pars strike as a calculated effort to undermine the authority of the Iranian regime and incite public uprisings, with Prime Minister Netanyahu making no secret of his desire to topple the Islamic leadership. Conversely, the United States is focusing the bulk of its military efforts on degrading Iran's missile, drone, and naval capacities rather than actively pursuing outright regime change.

The Qatar detail and threats to "blow up"

Qatar's position also drew significant attention in Trump's statements on the Truth Social platform. Trump argued that Qatar was not involved in the initial attacks and that Iran retaliated unjustly, implying that Tehran might have mistakenly thought Doha was complicit.

The remainder of the post featured typical Trump-style threats of overwhelming force. The US President issued a stern warning should Iran attack liquefied natural gas facilities in Qatar again:

"The United States will blow up the entire South Pars Gas Field with a force and violence that Iran has never seen or witnessed before, with or without Israel's help or approval."

Trump's explicit phrase "with or without Israel's approval" is widely considered a stark warning to the Netanyahu administration to engage in closer consultation in the future. For the Trump administration, which is reportedly growing increasingly impatient as oil and natural gas prices surge once again without securing the Strait of Hormuz, the war is proving to be increasingly complex and unpredictable.
