WISE NEWS PRESS / ANKARA, TURKEY — Nov. 28, 2025
Gulistan Kilic Kocyigit, Deputy Group Chair of the DEM Party, has disclosed details of a landmark meeting held on Imrali Island with PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan.
Representing the Parliamentary Commission for National Solidarity, Fraternity, and Democracy alongside AKP Deputy Chair Huseyin Yayman and MHP Deputy Chair Feti Yildiz, Kocyigit reported that the meeting covered historical Turkish-Kurdish relations, developments in Syria, and the search for a democratic solution. Ocalan reportedly appeared in good health and high spirits.
"Failure could trigger coup mechanics"
According to Kocyigit, Ocalan described the current process as "historic," emphasizing that his call on February 27 was based on a consensus reached at the state level.
Ocalan warned that if the process fails, similar to the breakdown of the 2013-2015 peace talks, "anti-solution forces" could intervene. "We must succeed this time; otherwise, coup mechanics could come into play," he was quoted as saying.
"Democratic construction, not just disarmament"
During the meeting, Ocalan reportedly positioned himself not only as an interlocutor for disarmament but also for the democratic and political resolution of the Kurdish question. "The issue is not just about laying down arms; it is fundamentally about construction," he stated, highlighting the need for legal regulations and democratic transformation.
Kocyigit also noted Ocalan's disappointment regarding the absence of the main opposition party, CHP, in the commission delegation, quoting him as saying, "I wish the CHP had come too."
Syria and the March 10 Agreement
A significant portion of the discussion focused on developments in Syria. Ocalan reportedly stressed the importance of implementing the "March 10 Agreement" between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Damascus administration.
Proposing formulas such as the integration of armed forces into the army and linking local security units to the Ministry of Interior, Ocalan expressed his willingness to contribute to the solution process, stating, "If conditions are met and a ground for dialogue develops, they will listen to me."
