CHISINAU, MOLDOVA — The newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Chisinau, Uygar Mustafa Sertel, has officially commenced his diplomatic mission after presenting his letters of credence to Moldovan President Maia Sandu.

Highlighting the historical significance of the diplomatic relations established on February 3, 1992, Ambassador Sertel emphasized a strong commitment to further advancing political, economic, commercial, and cultural cooperation between Turkey and Moldova during his tenure.

Extensive diplomatic career and education

Born in Istanbul in 1974, Uygar Mustafa Sertel graduated from the Department of International Relations at Gazi University's Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences in 1996. He later completed his master's degree at Atılım University in 2008 and participated in a postgraduate certificate program at Oxford University during the 2007-2008 academic year.

Sertel began his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1997. Over the years, he has served in various critical roles, including Deputy Director General for Relations with the Caucasus and Deputy Director General for Personnel. His international postings include the Turkish Embassy in Beijing, the Consulate General in Salzburg, the Embassy in London, and the Embassy in Stockholm. Prior to his appointment in Chisinau, he served as the Consul General in Constanta from 2017 to 2018 and as Deputy Director General for Personnel at the headquarters from 2019 to 2022.

Economic partnerships and cultural goals

In his inaugural message, Ambassador Sertel drew attention to the robust economic ties between the two nations. Noting that Turkey ranks third in Moldova's total exports and fifth in its imports, Sertel highlighted the successful implementation of numerous projects by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA).

He also pointed out the growing tourism sector and connectivity, mentioning that scheduled flights by Turkish Airlines and Air Moldova, along with summer charter flights, are significantly shortening distances and bringing the societies closer together.

Strengthening ties with Gagauz Turks

The Ambassador underscored the importance of the Gagauz people, describing them as a vital bridge of friendship between Turkey and Moldova. He assured that efforts to support the development of the Gagauz kin in all areas will continue in strict coordination with the Consulate General in Comrat.

Sertel particularly praised the educational and cultural efforts in the region, offering the following assessment regarding the ongoing local initiatives:

"Our teachers at the Congaz Süleyman Demirel Moldovan-Turkish High School and the instructors working at universities in Moldova generate significant added value through their dedicated work for the youth, earning widespread appreciation."

The Ambassador, who speaks English and is married with one child, concluded his message by reaffirming that the embassy's doors will always remain open to Turkish citizens and kin residing in Moldova.
