Journalist claims Bilal Erdogan being groomed for key AKP role

ANKARA, TÜRKİYE — In a striking analysis of Turkey's shifting political landscape, journalist Sedat Bozkurt has claimed that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is orchestrating a strategic plan to position his son, Bilal Erdoğan, as the next chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
According to Bozkurt’s column, this move is part of a broader strategy that involves preparing for early elections, tentatively scheduled for late 2027 or early 2028, and reshaping the party's leadership with "reasonable" figures rather than aggressive ones.
Economic targets delayed
Bozkurt first highlighted the discrepancies in the government's economic promises. He criticized Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek for postponing inflation targets to 2027 during a recent meeting with business leaders.
"In our country, those who govern continue in their posts as if nothing happened, despite failing to fulfill any of their promises," Bozkurt wrote, noting that Şimşek remains in office even after admitting that "not everything is going as predicted." This perceived lack of accountability, he argued, is driving voters away from politics.
A shift to 'reasonable' figures
The journalist suggested that while President Erdoğan appears disengaged from domestic politics, he is actively constructing a new team. Bozkurt observed a deliberate shift from combative figures to more moderate names in key positions:
-
Foreign Ministry: Hakan Fidan
-
Intelligence (MIT): İbrahim Kalın
-
RTÜK (Radio and TV Council): Mehmet Daniş replacing Ebubekir Şahin
-
Communications Directorate: Speculation that Burhanettin Duran may replace Fahrettin Altun.
Early election timeline: November 2027
Bozkurt claimed that hopes for a new constitution have faded, leading Erdoğan to pivot toward early elections. Citing backstage information, he stated that November 2027 is the targeted date, contingent on the performance of the economic program. However, current indicators suggest this could be pushed to March 2028.
He noted that Erdoğan needs the support of 360 lawmakers in parliament to call for early elections and secure his own candidacy, making the stances of opposition parties like DEM and IYI Party critical.
The Bilal Erdogan plan
The most significant claim in the analysis concerns the political future of Bilal Erdoğan. Bozkurt argued that Bilal's increasing public visibility is no coincidence but part of a calculated succession plan:
-
Step 1: Bilal Erdoğan will enter parliament as a deputy in the next election.
-
Step 2: Following a constitutional amendment after the election, the President will be barred from being a party chairman.
-
Step 3: Bilal Erdoğan will become the AKP General Chairman, while Recep Tayyip Erdoğan continues as a non-partisan President.
Bozkurt posited that this separation of powers would be presented as a concession to the opposition while simultaneously clearing the path for Erdoğan to run for several more terms. He added that the ruling party will likely switch to "election economy" mode starting in July 2026, increasing aid to low-income groups to secure voter support.
