Turkish social media stars arrested on drug charges in Istanbul

ISTANBUL, TÜRKİYE — Six well-known Turkish social media influencers, including Simge Barankoğlu and Taha Özer, were arrested by an Istanbul court this week as part of a sweeping investigation into narcotics and prostitution rings.

The arrests mark a significant crackdown on digital content creators allegedly involved in organized crime. Following their detention in simultaneous police raids, the suspects were referred to the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan, where a judge ordered their pre-trial detention based on the strength of the evidence presented.

Serious charges filed

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has levied serious charges against the group. According to court documents, the influencers are accused of "purchasing, accepting, or possessing drugs or stimulants for personal use," "providing premises and facilities for prostitution," and "encouraging or facilitating the use of drugs or stimulants."

Authorities allege that the suspects used their online platforms not only for personal branding but also to facilitate illegal activities. The investigation remains ongoing as police examine digital evidence seized during the raids.

High-profile detainees

The list of those arrested includes prominent figures in Turkey's social media landscape. Alongside Barankoğlu and Özer, the court also ordered the detention of Heves Güzel, Ebru Arman, Eda Alboya, and Arif İskilip.

The detention of these high-profile individuals, who collectively have millions of followers, has sparked widespread public debate regarding the regulation of online personalities and the hidden activities behind their curated digital lives.
