ANKARA, TURKEY — Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Deputy Chairman and Samsun Deputy Ilyas Topsakal has made a surprise visit to Moscow to advance his party's vision for a Turkey-Russia-China (TRC) alliance as a counterweight to the US-Israel coalition.
The diplomatic contacts highlight a push for alternative global partnerships amid shifting global dynamics, carrying significant implications for Turkey's foreign policy trajectory and the future of the ruling People's Alliance ahead of the 2028 elections.
Promoting Bahceli's 'TRC' vision
MHP leader Devlet Bahceli's proposal for a trilateral alliance against the US-Israel coalition has resonated at the highest levels in Russia. According to a report by the Russian newspaper Vedomosti, Topsakal held a series of meetings with politicians and intellectuals in the Russian capital to directly convey Bahceli's strategic proposal to his counterparts.
Economic and security partnerships
Sharing his perspectives with the press during his contacts in Moscow, Topsakal emphasized the importance of establishing a potential new mechanism. Noting that the rapprochement between the three countries would not remain solely in the economic dimension, Topsakal argued that this step could yield vital consequences for regional and global security.
Summarizing his foreign policy vision, the senior MHP official stated:
"Turkey needs to develop alternative partnerships in a period when global balances are shifting."
Foreign policy conditions for 2028
The domestic political implications of Topsakal's visit also found striking coverage in the Russian press. Vedomosti's report raised a significant claim regarding the MHP's conditions for maintaining the People's Alliance with the AK Party in the upcoming 2028 elections.
According to the Russian daily, the prerequisite for the continuation of the alliance is "not ministerial positions, but the adoption of a program aimed at cooperation with Russia and China."
Russian media questions Turkey's axis
The Russian media is closely monitoring this diplomatic maneuver by the MHP, a critical partner in the ruling bloc led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Vedomosti evaluated Topsakal's March visit as a potential turning point in foreign policy axis debates.
Analyzing the meetings, the newspaper noted that the presence of a senior MHP figure in Moscow has reignited discussions about whether Turkey's geopolitical direction is shifting. The publication highlighted that the MHP has recently come to the forefront with statements advocating for closer ties with Russia and China, signaling new messages regarding Ankara's delicate foreign policy balances.
