NATO urges Turkey for early F-16 deployment amid Russia tensions

WISE NEWS PRESS / ANKARA, TURKEY

NATO has requested Turkey to deploy its F-16 fighter jets to the Alliance’s Baltic Air Policing mission months ahead of schedule, aiming to fortify the defense line following a surge in Russian airspace violations.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the Alliance asked Ankara to station its warplanes in Estonia for a four-month rotation between August and December 2026. Under the original timeline, the Turkish Air Force was slated to deploy to Romania from December 2026 to March 2027. However, citing heightened regional security concerns, NATO is now seeking to accelerate this contribution and shift the focus to the Baltic front.

Ankara yet to finalize decision

Sources familiar with the sensitive matter, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted that Ankara has not yet issued an official response to NATO's request. The Turkish Ministry of National Defense declined to comment on the deployment, and NATO officials have similarly left inquiries unanswered. This diplomatic request comes at a significant time, as President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s administration prepares to host the NATO Leaders' Summit this coming July.

Rising security risks in the Black Sea

The request also highlights the complex security landscape Turkey currently navigates. In December, a Turkish F-16 shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) approaching Turkish airspace over the Black Sea. This incident was followed days later by the discovery of a crashed drone, suspected to be of Russian origin, in the country’s northwest. Ankara remains increasingly concerned about security incidents in the Black Sea, including maritime escalations involving Russia-linked vessels.
