NYT reveals Assad family’s luxury exile in Moscow and Dubai

WISE NEWS PRESS / MOSCOW, RUSSIA — DECEMBER 23, 2025

Striking details regarding the exile of fallen Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad and his family have emerged following an investigation by the New York Times (NYT). The report, which tracked 55 high-ranking former regime officials, reveals a life of opulence and immunity under Russian protection, supported by the immense wealth extracted from Syria over decades.

According to sources, the Assad family initially stayed in luxury suites at the Four Seasons in Moscow, costing approximately $13,000 per week, before moving to a secure villa in the Rublyovka suburb—an elite enclave known as a "luxury village" for the Russian elite.

High-altitude dining and intelligence monitoring

Bashar al-Assad has been spotted dining at "Sixty," a high-end restaurant located on the 62nd floor of the Federation Tower, one of Europe's tallest buildings. Staff members reportedly ensure that no photographs are taken to maintain the family's privacy. Meanwhile, his brother Maher al-Assad, the former commander of the 4th Armored Division, resides in the Capital Towers complex and has been seen at luxury hookah bars in the city's business district. Russian intelligence reportedly monitors their every move, with strict instructions for the family to avoid making any public statements.

Champagne and yacht parties in Dubai

While Syria remains in economic ruins, the younger generation of the Assad family continues to flaunt their wealth in the United Arab Emirates. Social media posts tracked by The Times show Sham al-Assad, Maher’s daughter, celebrating her 22nd birthday at the French restaurant Bagatelle in Dubai and on a private vessel named "Stealth Yacht." The festivities featured luxury gifts from brands such as Chanel and Dior. Similarly, Bashar’s daughter, Zein al-Assad, continues her studies at Sorbonne University’s Abu Dhabi campus under special diplomatic arrangements with UAE authorities.

Abandoned aides and "The Final Betrayal"

The investigation also highlights Bashar al-Assad’s treatment of his inner circle during the frantic flight from Damascus. A former private assistant was reportedly rushed onto the escape plane without any funds, only to be left with a massive bill at the Four Seasons in Moscow. After Assad refused to answer his calls, the assistant was eventually sent back to Syria by Russian authorities and currently lives in poverty in a remote mountain village.

"Bashar lives his life as if nothing happened," a former colleague told NYT. "He insulted us while he was here, and he cheated us on his way out."
