Protesters Scale Brandenburg Gate, Call on Germany to Stop Genocide Complicity

WISE NEWS PRESS / BERLIN, GERMANY — NOVEMBER 14, 2025

Pro-Palestinian activists scaled the iconic Brandenburg Gate in Berlin to protest Germany’s policy toward the conflict in Gaza. The demonstrators unfurled a massive banner demanding the German government "Stop Complicity in Genocide."

A group of activists used a crane to reach the top of the historic monument in Pariser Platz. The large banner read: "Genocide: Never Again — Freedom for Palestine." The group waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans for a period before being apprehended.

Six Arrested as Political Tensions Rise

Berlin police confirmed that six activists were taken into custody for illegally climbing the historical monument.

The Brandenburg Gate action reflects increasing public pressure on the German government regarding its Gaza policy. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has repeatedly affirmed Germany’s "historic responsibility" for Israel’s security, citing the Nazi era and the Holocaust.

Merz's government has faced criticism and rejected calls from opposition parties for measures such as an arms embargo on Israel, the suspension of the EU-Israel trade agreement, and the recognition of a Palestinian state.

Widening Gulf Between Government and Public

Recent public opinion polls underscore a deepening rift between the German public and the government's stance on Gaza.

An ARD survey indicated that 63% of Germans oppose Israel's attacks in Gaza, and 55% desire the government to impose sanctions on Israel. A separate YouGov study further revealed that 62% of respondents labeled Israel's actions in Gaza as "genocide."

The protest highlights the growing domestic demand for a shift in German foreign policy, moving away from unconditional support for Israel toward a more critical, humanitarian stance.
