THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS — Queen Maxima of the Netherlands has commenced military training this week to become a reserve officer in the Dutch Armed Forces, aiming to contribute to national security efforts amid the army's initiative to increase personnel numbers.
The 54-year-old monarch, who has previously been seen participating in field exercises and wearing camouflage gear alongside King Willem-Alexander, is now formally undergoing the curriculum required to serve as an operational reservist.
Comprehensive military curriculum
According to a statement released by the Dutch Royal Family, Queen Maxima's training program covers "all practical and theoretical military elements required to become a reserve officer." The rigorous schedule includes instruction in physical endurance, self-defense, marksmanship, map reading, and military law.
Upon the successful completion of her training within the Royal Netherlands Army, the Queen will hold the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. The Ministry of Defense emphasized that she is undertaking this role because she "wants to contribute to the security of the country, like many others."

Service alongside regular troops
The palace confirmed that following her commissioning, Queen Maxima could be deployed to various locations where needed, "just like other reserve personnel." This move aligns with broader efforts to integrate more citizens into the defense framework of the Netherlands.
Following in the Princess's footsteps
Queen Maxima is not the first member of the Dutch Royal Family to take on active military duties recently. Her daughter and the heir to the throne, Crown Princess Amalia, completed her own voluntary military training as a reserve officer last month.
