Greek PM Mitsotakis praises Erdoğan as experienced leader ahead of Ankara visit

ATHENS, GREECE — Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his desire to maintain the "calm waters" that have characterized relations with Turkey for the past three years, emphasizing his confidence in the dialogue with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan ahead of his upcoming visit to Ankara.

Speaking to Foreign Policy magazine, Mitsotakis highlighted that he does not foresee any serious risk of escalation between the two nations, citing the experience of both leaders as a stabilizing factor in a region already fraught with instability.

"We are both experienced leaders"

Mitsotakis contrasted the current atmosphere with the tensions of the past, noting significant improvements. "Turkish-Greek relations were much more complicated 4-5 years ago than they are today," he said.

"President Erdoğan and I are experienced leaders. We both appreciate that there is no need to add new problems to the many already existing in the region," Mitsotakis stated. "I do not see the danger of serious tensions. We are keeping our communication channels open."

"Condemned to live side by side"

Emphasizing the geographical destiny of the two neighbors, Mitsotakis remarked, "We are condemned to live side by side," underlining the importance of stability in bilateral relations. However, the Greek leader also noted that disagreements would be addressed during his visit, stating he would clearly articulate Greece's positions on maritime boundaries in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.
