Trump disappointed as Zelenskyy has not yet read US peace plan
President Trump expressed frustration that Zelenskyy hasn't reviewed the U.S. peace plan, claiming the proposal is already favored by Russia and the Ukrainian people.
WISE NEWS PRESS / WASHINGTON, USA — DEC. 08, 2025
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not yet reviewed the peace plan proposed by Washington, expressing his "disappointment" regarding the delay.
Speaking at an event at the Kennedy Center, Trump argued that despite Zelenskyy's lack of review, the proposal has already generated a positive reception from both the Ukrainian public and Russia.
Disappointment over peace plan
Trump addressed the ongoing conflict, highlighting a disconnect between the U.S. proposal's reception and the Ukrainian leader's engagement with it.
"I know Zelenskyy hasn't read the plan proposed by the U.S. to end the Russia-Ukraine war yet, and because of this, I am disappointed," Trump said. He added that he believes the Ukrainian people and Russia like the plan, noting, "I am not sure if Zelenskyy has a problem with this".
Diplomatic contacts regarding the plan are ongoing. U.S. and Ukrainian delegations met in Geneva on Nov. 23 to discuss Trump's 28-point peace plan. A second meeting followed on Nov. 30 in Florida, led by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov.
Tariffs and national security
Beyond the war in Ukraine, Trump defended his economic policies, claiming that his tariff system has significantly bolstered national security. He asserted that he has "ended 8 wars largely thanks to trade or tariffs".
The President argued that tariffs provide the executive office with the ability to act "faster and more effectively," stating there is no alternative to them for national security purposes. He also noted that other tariff methods do not provide the same level of security and claimed that countries subject to these tariffs have not complained.
Trade talks with neighbors
Trump also touched upon ongoing trade negotiations with North American neighbors, describing contacts with Canada and Mexico as "productive".
When asked about restarting negotiations with Ottawa, Trump remained cautious. "We'll see. The problem is Canada produces many things we need because we also produce them, but we will handle it," he said.
