WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES — U.S. President Donald Trump said his planned official visit to Beijing will go ahead as scheduled, expressing optimism about his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
According to Anadolu Agency, Trump made the remarks while speaking to reporters in Washington. The U.S. president said he expects his talks with Xi to go well and emphasized the personal relationship he says he has built with the Chinese leader over the years.
Trump confirms Beijing visit
Trump said there had been no change to the schedule for his official visit to China’s capital.
The planned trip comes at a sensitive time for U.S.-China relations, with the world’s two largest economies continuing to manage tensions over trade, technology, security, regional influence and global economic competition.
Despite recurring disagreements between Washington and Beijing, high-level leader diplomacy remains one of the most important channels for preventing further escalation and keeping communication open.
Trump’s visit is expected to be closely watched by governments, markets and international observers.
“Xi is my friend”
Trump highlighted his personal relationship with Xi, saying he believes the upcoming meeting will be “great.”
“We will have a meeting with President Xi. I think it will be quite great. He is my friend. I have gotten along with him very well over the years,” Trump said.
The remarks appeared to signal Trump’s intention to approach the meeting through personal diplomacy, a style he has often emphasized in his relations with foreign leaders.
His comments also came amid broader efforts to maintain direct communication between Washington and Beijing despite structural rivalry between the two countries.
Economic ties in focus
Trump also spoke about the economic relationship between the United States and China.
The U.S. president said China had been economically “great” for his administration, expressing satisfaction with the state of economic engagement between the two countries.
The U.S.-China economic relationship is one of the most consequential in the world. Issues such as tariffs, market access, supply chains, technology restrictions, investment rules and manufacturing competition remain central to bilateral discussions.
The Beijing meeting is expected to include economic issues among its main topics, although the full official agenda has not yet been announced.
Leaders met in South Korea last year
Trump and Xi previously held a face-to-face meeting in South Korea last year.
That meeting was viewed as an important step in reviving direct communication between the two leaders. The planned Beijing visit would mark another major diplomatic engagement between the two sides.
Trump is expected to visit China on May 14-15 for what would be his second summit with Xi since their previous meeting.
The visit could provide an opportunity for both leaders to address difficult issues directly and seek areas of limited cooperation despite wider competition.
Washington and Beijing seek balance
Relations between the United States and China affect not only the two countries but also the wider global economy and international security environment.
Washington’s China policy continues to balance economic competition with diplomatic engagement. Beijing, meanwhile, seeks stable relations with the United States while defending its regional and global interests.
The tone of the Trump-Xi meeting could influence market expectations, diplomatic messaging and the direction of future bilateral talks.
Analysts say the personal rapport between leaders may help ease short-term tensions, but the deeper competition between the two powers is unlikely to disappear quickly.
Key issues expected at the summit
Although the detailed agenda for the Beijing visit has not been formally outlined, trade, economic balance and political communication are expected to be major areas of discussion.
Regional security issues, technology competition and global crises may also be addressed during the talks.
Trump’s friendly language toward Xi may be seen as an effort to create a more positive diplomatic atmosphere ahead of the visit.
However, both sides continue to face significant disagreements, including over tariffs, strategic influence in Asia, high-tech industries and international security alignments.
Eyes on May 14-15 talks
If the visit proceeds as planned, Trump’s trip to Beijing will be one of the most closely watched diplomatic events in U.S.-China relations this year.
The outcome may help determine whether the two countries can reduce tensions in key areas or whether competition will continue to dominate the relationship.
Trump’s statement that “Xi is my friend” placed personal diplomacy at the center of the upcoming talks, but the real test will be whether Washington and Beijing can translate that tone into practical agreements.
