Turkish Air Force downs unidentified drones violating airspace
Turkey intensified its Black Sea security after downing three drones in Ankara, Kocaeli, and Balikesir, including a Russian-made Orlan-10 reconnaissance UAV.
WISE NEWS PRESS / ANKARA, TÜRKİYE — DEC. 29, 2025
The Turkish Ministry of National Defense (MSB) confirmed the interception and downing of three separate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that violated Turkish airspace over the Black Sea throughout December.
According to official statements, one drone was intercepted and shot down by a Turkish F-16 fighter jet near Ankara, while two others—identified in Kocaeli and Balikesir—were found crashed in rural areas. The incidents have sparked a significant debate regarding regional security and the technical capabilities of modern reconnaissance drones.
Analysis of the Russian Orlan-10 UAV
One of the drones discovered in the Kocaeli-Izmit region has been identified by the Ministry of Interior as a Russian-made Orlan-10. This type of UAV is specifically designed for reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition for artillery units. Built with a low radar cross-section using composite materials like fiberglass and epoxy resin, the Orlan-10 is notoriously difficult to detect with conventional radar. With a wingspan of 3 meters and an endurance of up to 16 hours, it serves as a critical asset in electronic warfare and target coordination.
Multi-Sensor Detection and Interception
The MSB clarified that the drone downed between Ankara’s Elmadag and Cankiri districts was detected through "sensor fusion." This process combines data from traditional radar, electro-optical cameras, and electronic warfare sensors. While modern drones can often be mistaken for birds or interference on radar screens, thermal imaging and the monitoring of control signals (GPS and data links) allow Turkish defense systems to confirm the identity of a motorized aircraft before engaging. The Ankara drone was successfully neutralized by an air-to-air missile fired from an F-16 in an isolated area to avoid civilian casualties.
Official Warnings and Political Response
Following the incidents, Turkish authorities issued formal warnings to both Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to Black Sea security protocols and airspace integrity. Domestically, the events triggered a political debate regarding the rules of engagement. In response to allegations of delays in the decision-making process, the Presidency’s Directorate of Communications released a statement through the Center for Combating Disinformation, clarifying that all interceptions followed standard military procedures without waiting for external political instructions.
