US commanders call Iran conflict God's plan amid rising rhetoric
As tensions rise in the Middle East, complaints reveal a surge of fundamentalist Christian rhetoric and apocalyptic beliefs within the US military.

WASHINGTON, USA — Amid the ongoing military operations initiated against Iran by the US and Israeli armies, whistleblowers report that US military commanders are telling their troops the conflict is a part of "God's plan".
The Trump administration has long been criticized by secular Americans for utilizing religious rhetoric in politics. Recent reports sent to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), an organization founded to combat religious discrimination in the military, indicate that fundamentalist rhetoric is growing increasingly stronger within the US armed forces.
Increasing Christian symbolism at the Pentagon
Since being appointed by President Donald Trump, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has prominently displayed Christian symbolism. Under Hegseth's leadership, the Pentagon has been sharing videos featuring Bible verses and Crusader drawings from its official social media accounts.
Hegseth views US support for Israel as a "religious duty" and personally attends religious services held within the Pentagon during working hours. He has also invited fundamentalists like Doug Wilson, who advocates for the US to be governed by Christian Sharia, to these services that he initiated on his own accord. Furthermore, Hegseth bears a tattoo on his arm that reads "Deus Vult" ("God Wills It"), which was the famous slogan of the Crusades.
"This war is part of God's plan"
A report shared on journalist Jonathan Larsen's Substack account included the striking words of an anonymous whistleblower regarding the internal military messaging. The whistleblower detailed the apocalyptic themes being pushed by leadership:
"Our commander told us to tell the soldiers under our command that 'this war is part of God's plan'; he also referred to various passages in the biblical Book of Revelation about the apocalypse and the return of Jesus Christ."
MRFF Founder and President Mikey Weinstein stated that they have received more than 100 complaints of this nature. Weinstein noted that their clients are reporting the unbridled enthusiasm of their commanders and chain of command regarding this "Bible-approved" new war. According to Weinstein, commanders are portraying the conflict as an undeniable sign of the rapidly approaching fundamentalist Christian "End Times" vividly described in the New Testament's Book of Revelation.
"End Times" theology and Middle East policy
In Christian theology, the "End Times" refers to the period when human history will end with God's direct intervention and Jesus Christ will return to earth. Prophecies located in the Book of Revelation and the Book of Daniel suggest that before the end of the world, chaos will prevail, wars will break out, natural disasters will occur, moral collapse will be experienced, and the "Antichrist" will finally emerge.
Some Christians believe that the Bible strictly requires the existence of Israel for the return of Jesus Christ. Certain fundamentalist Christian groups think that for the Messiah's return, the Temple of Solomon must be built and a "great war must break out". These pro-chaos groups support wars in the Middle East to "force God into the apocalypse" in theological terms, and they heavily back the Trump administration's harsh military policies.
