Ukraine says Starlink crackdown reduced Russian drone attacks
Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov confirmed that SpaceX's move to disable unauthorized Starlink terminals has led to a significant decline in Russian drone strikes.

KYIV, UKRAINE — Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced that Russian aerial and drone attacks have significantly declined following SpaceX's move to deactivate unauthorized Starlink terminals used by the Russian military.
The crackdown specifically targets terminals procured by Russian forces through third-party countries, which were being utilized to guide Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) on the front lines. By cutting internet access for these unidentified devices, SpaceX has dealt a substantial blow to Russia's operational capabilities, effectively limiting their technological reach in the ongoing conflict.
Unauthorized terminals blocked
Minister Fedorov confirmed that SpaceX has now successfully blocked all Starlink receivers within Ukrainian borders that were not officially registered. Previously, Russian units had been able to bypass restrictions by using devices obtained through gray market channels, integrating them into their FPV (First Person View) drone systems for high-precision strikes.
The deactivation of these mülkiyeti belirsiz (unidentified ownership) devices has disrupted the real-time communication required for long-range drone navigation. Fedorov noted that this technical intervention has shifted the tactical balance in several key sectors of the battlefield.
Tangible impact on the battlefield
According to the Ministry, the measures taken have produced concrete results on the ground. Fedorov stated that there has been a decline in Starlink-supported drone attacks with a "real impact," highlighting that the collaboration between Ukraine and SpaceX is effectively narrowing Russia's technological options.
The Minister emphasized that the absence of high-speed, low-latency satellite internet makes it increasingly difficult for Russian operators to maintain control over drones in environments where traditional radio signals are heavily jammed.
Musk: Full coordination with Ukraine
Responding to a call for assistance from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense last week, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk reaffirmed his support for Kyiv's efforts to secure the network. Musk stated that the company is "ready to do more" to prevent unauthorized usage and ensured that SpaceX is moving in full coordination with Ukrainian authorities.
"We are taking additional steps to ensure that the Starlink network is used solely for its intended and authorized purposes," Musk noted in a recent correspondence, underscoring the commitment to prevent the exploitation of the technology by opposing forces.
The upcoming "White List" system
Minister Fedorov further revealed that a more sophisticated security system is currently under development. In the coming days, a "white list" application will be launched, ensuring that only Starlink terminals officially registered and approved by the Ukrainian government will be active within the combat zones.
This new system aims to completely eliminate the possibility of Russian forces hijacking the Starlink network for drone control. By requiring official authentication for every active terminal, Ukraine and SpaceX intend to create a closed, secure digital environment for defenders while permanently locking out unauthorized actors.
