US Ambassador Andrew Puzder: Trump administration 'awoke' Europe

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM —  In an exclusive interview with Euronews’ morning show Europe Today, the United States Ambassador to the European Union, Andrew Puzder, stated that President Donald Trump and his team have successfully encouraged Europe to take more decisive action on global challenges. Puzder remarked that the administration’s direct approach helped European nations stop "hitting the snooze button" and finally "wake up" to pressing geopolitical realities.

The Ambassador’s comments follow US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s recent address at the Munich Security Conference, where he called for greater alignment across the Atlantic. Puzder described the current diplomatic climate as "positive," noting that the ability to say what people "need to hear but don’t want to hear" is the hallmark of effective diplomacy.

A shift in Transatlantic tone

The reception of Rubio’s speech stood in contrast to the colder atmosphere of the previous year, when Vice President JD Vance delivered a blunter message to European allies. Puzder observed that European audiences were "very open" this time, even giving the Secretary of State a standing ovation.

"The EU's position on migration is moving significantly closer to the American approach," Puzder noted, highlighting that mass migration remains a core challenge for the continent. He distinguished between "managed migration" and the "uncontrolled flows" seen over the last decade, arguing that the European response to the latter had been largely negative.

Addressing economic and climate tensions

Puzder also touched upon the economic friction caused by differing climate policies. He suggested that Europe must evaluate the impact of its environmental regulations on per capita income and overall economic health. This follows Rubio’s criticism of "climate cult" policies which the administration argues can de-industrialize Western societies.

Beyond Brussels, Secretary Rubio recently visited Slovakia and Hungary—two EU nations known for their alignment with President Trump’s "America First" outlook. Rubio’s meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán ahead of the country's April elections drew some criticism regarding potential interference, which Puzder firmly dismissed.

Defending diplomatic outreach

"He has the right to visit Budapest. Hungary is a US ally and a member of the European Union," Puzder stated, defending the bilateral engagement. The Ambassador reiterated that the US continues to view Europe as a vital partner but insists that the relationship must evolve to meet modern security and economic standards.

As the Trump administration enters its second year, the focus remains on ensuring "fair and reciprocal" trade and encouraging European partners to take greater responsibility for regional defense, a move Washington describes as essential for a reinvigorated Western alliance.
