US Gas to Flow to Ukraine Via Greece in Strategic Energy Deal

WISE NEWS PRESS / ATHENS, GREECE — NOVEMBER 17, 2025

Ukraine and Greece have finalized a strategic energy agreement to facilitate the flow of U.S. natural gas (LNG) to Kyiv via the Greek-Balkan pipeline network, a vital measure to address Ukraine's urgent energy needs this winter.

The deal, signed by Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelenskyy and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, establishes an energy corridor running through Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova. The flow of gas is scheduled to commence in January 2026, marking a critical step in counteracting Russia's relentless attacks on Ukraine's power infrastructure.

Critical Need Due to Russian Attacks

President Zelenskyy stressed the critical nature of securing alternative energy supplies, citing Russia’s continued focus on destroying Ukraine’s power grid as winter sets in.

Zelenskyy highlighted the ongoing challenge:

"The Russians destroy, we rebuild, but it takes time and requires a lot of effort. We need gas imports due to damage to our own production. Deliveries will start in January, and it is critical that the agreements be implemented in the first quarter."

The agreement is a key element of Ukraine's extensive energy supply package prepared for the winter months, when demand peaks and the risk of outages increases due to military strikes.

New Energy Corridor and Timeline

The signed agreement initiates a new transit route for natural gas, moving the supply away from historical dependencies.

The gas will travel along the established path, starting from Greece and moving sequentially through:

  • Bulgaria

  • Romania

  • Moldova

  • Finally reaching Ukraine .

The energy flow is slated to begin in January 2026, with the full implementation of the agreements targeted for completion within the first quarter of the year.

Greece’s Key Support Role

Greece's role in brokering the sale and transit of US LNG is viewed as a crucial political and logistical act of support for Kyiv.

Zelenskyy conveyed his gratitude to the Greek administration for the solidarity: "This support is vital as we prepare for winter. Russia is still hitting civilian targets." The energy corridor serves as a critical security line for the Kyiv government, demonstrating active European participation in Washington's strategy to help replace Russian energy sources in Eastern Europe.
