US Moves in Lebanon: Hezbollah Plan Activated to Protect Gaza Ceasefire
The US offered support to the Lebanese Army to disarm Hezbollah and restore full state sovereignty, aiming to prevent a new conflict from jeopardizing the fragile Gaza ceasefire.

The escalation of tensions with Hezbollah in Lebanon is threatening the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, prompting the United States to intervene to prevent a new regional conflict by offering support to the Lebanese Army for the disarmament of Hezbollah and the establishment of full state authority.
The US administration announced it is ready to support the Lebanese Army in implementing a plan aimed at disarming Hezbollah and ensuring full state sovereignty across the country.
Washington's move comes amid increasing Israeli attacks in Lebanon and rising tension that jeopardizes the future of the Gaza ceasefire. US officials conveyed their plans to strengthen the Lebanese Army to President Joseph Aoun, with the goal of stabilizing security in the country's south and preventing a new war.
According to a Bloomberg report, the US administration is prepared to assist the Lebanese Army in executing a plan intended to disarm the Iran-backed Hezbollah and establish complete state sovereignty throughout Lebanon. The plan was announced in August but had failed to make concrete progress due to tensions with Hezbollah.
President Joseph Aoun received a delegation from the US Treasury Department, led by Sebastian Gorka, an aide to US President Donald Trump, at the presidential residence near the capital, Beirut.
According to a report by the state agency NNA regarding the meeting, the US side expressed willingness to support the army's efforts to stabilize security in southern Lebanon and "re-establish the state's authority across all its territories."
Aoun Demands End to Israeli Attacks
During the meeting, President Aoun reminded the delegation of Israel's ongoing air attacks on southern Lebanon, emphasizing that the Tel Aviv administration must adhere to the ceasefire: "Israel's continuous attacks threaten Lebanon's sovereignty. The cessation of these violations is essential for lasting peace."
Aoun recalled that he instructed the army during the summer months to prepare a plan for all weapons to be brought under state control by the end of the year. The Lebanese Army is reportedly preparing to deploy along the southern borders to implement the US-backed plan.
US Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Lebanon, Tom Barrack, highlighted the difficulties the Lebanese government faces in taking heavy weapons from Hezbollah. Barrack stated, "Hezbollah says it will not disarm as long as Israeli aggression continues."
Tension Persists on the Israel-Hezbollah Line
Following the ceasefire brokered by the US and France at the end of 2024, the Israeli military has recently conducted one of its most intensive air attack campaigns against southern Lebanon and the Beqaa Valley. Tel Aviv justifies the attacks as necessary due to Hezbollah's "attempts to rebuild its military capacity."
According to United Nations data, hundreds of Israeli air attacks on Lebanese territory since the ceasefire have resulted in at least 300 deaths, more than 100 of whom were recorded as civilians. Approximately 80,000 Lebanese are still unable to return to their homes, and over 30,000 people have been evacuated from northern Israel due to security concerns.
Gaza Ceasefire Also at Risk
The fragile situation in Lebanon also jeopardizes the ceasefire in effect between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Hezbollah, which has close relations with Hamas, is believed to be increasing the risk of renewed conflict with Israel in parallel with developments in Gaza.
The Gaza ceasefire was implemented last year as part of US President Donald Trump's peace plan aimed at ending the regional wars. However, the mutual attacks in recent weeks have made the sustainability of the ceasefire debatable on both the Lebanon and Gaza fronts.
